Plant of the month: Cow Parsley ‘Ravenswing’ (May)

In May our hedgerows are alive with the beautiful sight of cow parsley. Recreate that wonderful ethereal feel in your own garden with some crimson-black leaved ‘Ravenswing’ (Anthriscus sylvestris). It’s lovely for your spring garden and ideal for arrangements too.

Cultivation notes

Grow in any well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. Cut down to near ground level in early autumn and mulch well

Planting

‘Ravenswing’ is a decorative cow parsley with deep-purple leaves and pink-tinged flowers. It is a short-lived perennial.

Propagation

Propagate by seed; sow seeds in a cold frame in autumn or spring and select dark-leaved seedlings.

Pruning and training

Deadhead to prevent prolific self-seeding. Alernatively, leave the seed heads on for late season interest and to allow the plant to spread itself around naturally.

Plant positioning

Plant in full sun or partial shade in well drained soil.
